Star Family Travels found a wonderful state park in western Louisiana. Named after Sam Houston Jones, governor of Louisiana from 1940-44, it is nestled in north Lake Charles. As Texans, the name caught our attention and indeed, Governor Jones was named after Sam Houston. Sam Houston Jones State Park sits on the Calcasieu River. The trees are tall and and there is plenty of wetland (read: swamp) to go around. In short, it is a beautiful park to hike and explore.
We had a wonderful pull-through spot surrounded by trees. The weather was perfect — sunny and warm with a breeze. We spent most of our time outside.
Especially as there was a fire pit at each spot. Each night we gathered around for quiet time and occasional marshmallow roasting. It became a favorite part of the day for me.

And his namesake — Sam Houston — is played wonderfully by Sam Elliott in “Gone to Texas.” If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Great history for the (older) kids! Enjoy your ‘smores! Looks lovely.
