Today, we were able to resume a little of the Travels in Star Family Travels — yay!
We are back in Houston and returned to the Museum District. It’s becoming something of a go to for our new homeschooling efforts of education meeting fun. That certainly was the case for today’s visit to The Children’s Museum of Houston. A main attraction of the museum is an exhibit called Kidtropolis.
Kidtropolis offers an interactive Main Street with opportunities to learn about working jobs, collecting paychecks, and managing bank accounts. Here the kids are in their best worker bee mode.
Besides the chance to play pretend and interact with others, there were math lessons including tracking their deposits made in the ATM for checking and savings and shopping on a budget, as well as lots of reading throughout. Sonny-Bunny was so proud of his bank account and rushed to “add” money to his account with every job.
There was also a city council section with a place to learn about issues and vote. So I feel like that is a social studies win.
Finally, a fun, educational element is the Kidtropolis University where a series of tasks completed earns the kids a “degree”.
